Waters boil with jellyfish in one of Palau's marine lakes. Surprises hide in each of some 80 such lakes in this Pacific archipelago.

Mangrove Saplings, Bali
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
To reestablish mangroves on the island of Bali, workers set out some 1,300 saplings an acre (0.4 hectares); nearly a thousand acres (400 hectares) have been planted. Indonesia's forestry minister says that since the deadly 2004 tsunami, his people have come to value the protection coastal forests can provide.

Hanging Laundry, Kansas
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
"We're farm people," says Janice Haney of Greensburg, Kansas. "I enjoy hanging clothes out. We don't have to waste electricity on the dryer. The good old Kansas wind can do it on its own."

Giraffes at Sunset, Masai Mara Park, Kenya
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
After a safari in the Masai Mara Park we were racing back to our camp trying to get home before sunset. No one is allowed out in the park after dark. When I saw this photo op I had to convince our driver to stop just for a second so I could take this one picture. It was worth the risk of a fine for being out after sunset but fortunately we made it back in time.

While exploring Walkerville, Ontario's vacant, leafy icon known as the Walker Power Building, I noticed how forlorn my dim reflection appeared in its window. The vibrant colour of the windowpane and its climbing spring leaves contrast the dismal fate of this historic landmark.

Green Roof, New York City
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
Some green roofs can be far simpler to create than traditional roof gardens. Volunteers from Cook + Fox installed the New York City architectural firm’s roof themselves using Green Paks. The polyethylene bags, marketed by St. Louis-based Green Roof Blocks, contain low-maintenance plants and can be laid out with no preparation beyond rolling out a layer of waterproof material that controls drainage and blocks the intrusion of roots into roof structures.

Dry Ranch, Australia
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
Simon Booth remembers when he grazed 250 head of cattle on his ranch in southeastern Australia—a sight his children Ryan and Claire may never see. A seven-year drought has the region, and its people, in its grips.
A drill pad built on top of fragile wetlands probes for new oil reserves. Technology imported from the West is helping Russia's oil industry modernize, but Soviet-era spills and pipeline breaks have contaminated much of the region.

Humpback Whales in Sunlit Water, Tahiti
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
When you swim with humpback whales it's not their size that overwhelms you but their beauty. You want to stay in that moment forever. These three humpbacks came over to me to check me out. They put on a beautiful dancing display that makes your heart stop and you wish for the moment to never end. When they were done ten minutes later they took off but left me with amazing memories. Tahiti, French Polynesia.
