www.ddhw.com Friends, you gentlemen and gentleladies have missed the point of the various gas grades. Driving 18 wheeler for so many years, I drink this stuff everyday. So I would like to make some points on the different grades of gases. www.ddhw.com The grade of a given type of gas is its EQUIVALENT octane/heptane (ratio) index. Gas is a mixture, containing more than 100 different component s, but major components are those saturated hydrocarbons, alkanes branched or not, containing 5C up to 8C. Gas contains more low carbon alkanes with more straight chain isomers, burns more easily, and faster, there fore burns more violently (imagine explosive burn), and gas contains more high C alkanes with more branched isomers burns smoothly and gradually ( relatively speaking). www.ddhw.com Explosive type of burning can create a sudden pressure surge on the piston, observed as engine knocking, which results engine's irregular or uneven rotation in a cycle (冲程). It is not good for engines. While for a gas containing high C contents, knocking is also there but is not so severe. To eliminate knocking, and improve the smooth burning of gas in the engine, various additives are used. Tetraethyllead was the old one, gases containing it were called "leaded gas". Nowadays, new additives are used, such as Cp'Mn(CO)3, and other organic aromatic compounds. Different companies have different formulas for their products, even the same company's same grade of gas has different formulas, winter formula/summer formula. www.ddhw.com
How to compare these different gases' burning performances? A series of standard mixtures of only Octane and haptane are used, which show different extents of "knocking". For example, Husonghu's company's certain gas has same knocking as standard octane/haptane ratio= 87's, Hu's gas will be labeled as grade 87. Similarly, 色盲 MM's gas shows knocking same as a standard octane/haptane ratio = 95's, her gas will be labeled as grade 95.
High grade gas is good for the engine, but may feel lack of power, and can not make you save money on gas. Low grade gas has power but can harm the engine. In drag racing, people deliberately add various nitrogen oxides to create the surge pressure of the engine, and that is also why you heard the explosive sound on the drag racing track. www.ddhw.com
Hope this will help you a little bit.
