"We have performed accurate measurements of the effective mass in a two-dimensional electron system in silicon by analyzing temperature dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the low-temperature limit. We have found good correspondence with the sharp increase of the effective mass in the vicinity of the critical electron density previously obtained from parallel field magnetoresistance [Shashkin et al., Phys. Rev. B 66, 073303 (2002)]. The measurements in tilted magnetic fields have shown that, in contrast to existing theories, the effective mass is independent of the degree of spin polarization, which points to spin-independent origin of the enhanced effective mass."
