Alone among those saluted in Verve's celebrated songbooks, Johnny Mercer was a lyrcist--one who collaborated with, among other composers, Harold Arlen,Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern, Henry Mancini, and Harry Warren. Mercer gave their sophisticated melodies old fashioned, everyday speech,culled from his Deep South boyhood.
Yet it's these songs' sheer adaptability-- the true sign of great writing--that is displayed on this specially-priced 3-CD set. How many ways can Mercer's wit and wisdom be conveyed? Two and even three versions of his chestnuts here reveal how varied Verve artists' interpretations are.
Discs one and two present vocal interpretations of Mercer songs while disc three provides instrumental versions.
