7月27日，2012年伦敦奥运将拉开帷幕。据《福布斯》杂志的统计，1976至2012年间各届奥运的投入，最节俭的是洛杉矶奥运的5.46亿美元，2008年北京奥运则以400亿美元打造了无与伦比的一届奥运会。由于北京给以后的奥运会树立了一座几乎无法超越的“标杆”，北京奥运之后的伦敦奥运自然压力巨大。

在欧债危机持续发酵的影响下，伦敦奥运会从一开始就面临资金不足的窘境。欧债危机令两个主要基建工程——预算10亿英镑的奥运村和4亿英镑的媒体中心的开发商资金长时间无法到位。为了节省开支，伦敦甚至取消了4项临时场馆的修建计划。雪上加霜的是，2009年由于伦敦奥运会一级赞助商北电公司的破产和退出，令组委会失去了约4000万英镑的赞助。英国《经济学人》杂志将英国列为2012年经济前景最为悲观的国家之一。安永会计事务所也表示，英国经济陷入停滞的“危险十字路口”。

在内忧外患之下，财政拮据的英国人只好“紧缩”办奥运，一切皆以节俭为本。先是简陋的奥运村遭到了媒体和运动员的诟病。原本伦敦奥运村设计的时候预留的房屋数量是4000间，以保证每位运动员都能有自己的房间。不过，金融危机之后，没钱成了最大的问题，为了降低成本，组委会不得不将原有的4000间房屋的计划，压缩成了仅2800间。这样，运动员不得不几个人凑合挤在同一间房了。其次，伦敦奥运场地大多只是翻修旧场馆。据媒体报道，北京奥运场馆建设总投资130亿人民币，共建设场馆31座，而伦敦奥运场馆建设预算为24亿美元，新建场馆14座不足北京奥运一半，其中还有8个是临时场馆。以篮球馆为例，该馆是一座临时性场馆，仅耗资4300万英镑，座椅材料全部为可回收材料。在节俭办奥运的原则指导之下，英国主管体育及奥运事务的政府部长休·罗伯森7月18日在伦敦表示，伦敦奥运会和残奥会所有开支有望控制在92.98亿英镑（145亿美元）的预算范围内。尽管伦敦奥运已极尽节俭之所能，一分钱掰成两半花，但屡次追加的奥运预算让英国国内批评声不断，直指奥运开销巨大。7月25日英媒报道，英国40多个组织计划举行示威活动，抗议伦敦奥运会的过分商业化和巨大开销。

事实上，奥运既是机遇，但更是挑战。没有宏厚的财力支撑，往届奥运举办城市中有不少吃尽苦头。2004年的雅典奥运希腊为此投入了150亿美元，背负债务累计总额达GDP的112%，平均每个家庭要背负5万欧元债务，加上遇到金融危机，最终令整个国家严重资不抵债，走到破产边缘。1976年的蒙特利尔奥运让该市背负了高达10亿加元的债务，直到2006年，蒙特利尔用了整整30年，才偿还完其奥运债务。
